Packing List

Rainbow Mountain is not just an ordinary day trip; it requires preparation for extremely cold conditions. Temperatures can drop as low as 5°C (41°F), so it’s essential to bring enough warm layers! We highly recommend wearing a down jacket, fleece, woolen hat, gloves, and thermal layers under your pants to protect yourself from the cold wind.

Visitors should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. The Andean climate can shift within an hour, especially at high altitudes where strong winds are common. This is particularly true during the rainy season (November-March).

Since the hike takes around 3 to 4 hours, we believe the following list is essential for your Rainbow Mountain adventure. These items should be on your hiking checklist:

  • Hiking backpack a medium size
  • Hiking shoes
  • Pocket money in Soles or USD dolars
  • Rain Jackets or plastic poncho
  • Small water botlle
  • Snacks
  • Sun glases
  • Sun hat
  • Sun scream
  • Weather-appropriate clothing

The climate in our country is highly variable and does not follow the traditional four seasons. Here, in just one day, you can experience all four seasons! That’s why we recommend our visitors be prepared for any weather conditions, whether rain or sunshine.

A very important factor affecting our climate is global warming, which has become a major concern due to the melting glaciers in the Peruvian Andes. This phenomenon also impacts the usual weather patterns.

However, something very distinct in our country, especially in the Andean regions, is that we only have two main seasons throughout the year:

  • Dry Season: This season lasts from the end of April until the end of September. During this time, the first rains start to appear, but overall, it is the best period to visit our region and explore the breathtaking Machu Picchu while avoiding weather-related inconveniences.
  • Rainy Season: This season extends from October until the end of April. During this period, we advise all visitors to pack their belongings in waterproof bags, as the weather can change quickly—sunny mornings can turn into heavy rain in just a few hours.

We understand that extreme climates exist worldwide, but this should not deter us from the desire to explore the world, discover marvelous cultures, and interact with them. Welcome to Peru and Machu Picchu!
