The Sacred Valley of the Incas continues for our travelers with a train journey to Machu Picchu, considered the Lost City of the Incas. Nestled between Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu Mountain, this ancient citadel holds countless cultural treasures waiting to be discovered. With the guidance of our professional tour guides, you will explore its secrets, ensuring a perfect and unforgettable experience a once-in-a-lifetime journey.

Itinerary

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is located just 45 minutes from Cusco and serves as the gateway to the world-renowned wonder, Machu Picchu.

Your adventure begins at 7:30 AM, starting with a visit to the Cochahuasi Animal Sanctuary, where you’ll witness incredible wildlife, including the Andean condor, the second-largest bird on the planet. You’ll also see pumas, spectacled bears, vicuñas—Peru’s national animal—and other endemic species.

Next, we head to the Taray Viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Sacred Valley and the Andes mountain range, which stretches across South America.

We then visit the Pisac Archaeological Site, famous for its impressive Inca cemetery with over 2,000 ancient tombs. In the nearby colorful local market, you can admire and purchase handmade textiles created using ancestral techniques.

Continuing through the valley, we follow the Vilcanota River until reaching Urubamba, the heart of the Sacred Valley. Here, we take a one-hour break for lunch before heading to our next destination.

After lunch, we visit the Maras Salt Mines, where you’ll learn about the traditional salt extraction process used since Inca times. You’ll have time to explore and walk among the thousands of salt terraces.

Our journey continues to Moray, an Inca agricultural experimentation center at 3,800 meters above sea level. This site is believed to have helped the Incas cultivate over 3,000 varieties of potatoes, 300 types of corn, and many other crops by using its circular terraces to simulate different climatic conditions.

Next, we explore Ollantaytambo, an ancient Inca fortress over 500 years old. Here, you’ll experience a living Inca town, where locals still reside in original stone houses and wear traditional Andean clothing.

After this incredible day of exploration, we head to Ollantaytambo train station, where we take the Expedition Train at 7:04 PM to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, our guide will escort you to your 3-star hotel, where you’ll receive a briefing for your Machu Picchu visit the next day.

The climate in our country is highly variable and does not follow the traditional four seasons. Here, in just one day, you can experience all four seasons! That’s why we recommend our visitors be prepared for any weather conditions, whether rain or sunshine.

A very important factor affecting our climate is global warming, which has become a major concern due to the melting glaciers in the Peruvian Andes. This phenomenon also impacts the usual weather patterns.

However, something very distinct in our country, especially in the Andean regions, is that we only have two main seasons throughout the year:

  • Dry Season: This season lasts from the end of April until the end of September. During this time, the first rains start to appear, but overall, it is the best period to visit our region and explore the breathtaking Machu Picchu while avoiding weather-related inconveniences.
  • Rainy Season: This season extends from October until the end of April. During this period, we advise all visitors to pack their belongings in waterproof bags, as the weather can change quickly—sunny mornings can turn into heavy rain in just a few hours.

We understand that extreme climates exist worldwide, but this should not deter us from the desire to explore the world, discover marvelous cultures, and interact with them. Welcome to Peru and Machu Picchu!

This mountain is located within the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, rising 300 meters above the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes up and another 45 minutes down.

Huayna Picchu Mountain preserves several archaeological remains, including the Moon Temple and other structures connected by authentic Inca trails, steps, tunnels, and naturally formed caves, making the journey even more fascinating. Undoubtedly, this is one of Machu Picchu’s top attractions. From the summit, Huayna Picchu offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu Mountain, and the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Currently, the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Culture, regulates daily visitor access to the mountain. Only 400 tickets are available per day, divided into two groups of 200 each. The first entry slot is from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, and the second from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Due to its increasing popularity, we highly recommend booking at least three months in advance to secure your visit to this extraordinary place.

This mountain is also located within the park and is only a 1 hour and 20-minute hike on your own. Once you reach the summit, you’ll capture stunning photos with panoramic views of the entire valley where the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel is situated. You’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes Mountain range and the glaciers that protect this unique ecosystem.

The demand for permits to hike this mountain is rapidly increasing. For this reason, we recommend booking at least two months in advance, as there is a daily visitor limit for this incredible experience. The hike has two entry schedules: the first from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and the second from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with a maximum of 200 people per group.
