This ancient Inca trail was abandoned for over 150 years. In the past, it was an essential route for trade and transportation, used by locals from tropical regions like Santa Teresa, Huyro, Santa María, and Quillabamba in the province of La Convención. Additionally, this very path played a crucial role for Hiram Bingham, the explorer who rediscovered Machu Picchu, as he used it to transport the valuable treasures of this world wonder. Today, the Sacred Valley trek offers an authentic experience, following original Inca trails with stone-carved stairways, fascinating archaeological sites, and a rich diversity of flora and fauna. The first stop along the way is Kanamarca, meaning «Town of Fire» in Quechua. Here, you’ll witness impressive Inca structures and take in breathtaking panoramic views of the Sacred Valley and the mighty Vilcanota River, known in Quechua as Willkamayu, flowing in the distance.

Itinerary

Our adventure begins in Cusco, where your guide will pick you up early in the morning. We’ll drive through the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas, passing by Chinchero, until we reach Ollantaytambo, where we’ll make a short stop for breakfast. After about 45 minutes, we’ll continue our journey for another 30 minutes to Piscacucho (Km 82), the official starting point of our trek.

Before setting off, your guide will give you important instructions for the hike, as this route is part of a National Protected Reserve. We’ll then begin our walk, making our first stop at the Kanamarca archaeological site, known as the Town of Fire, where your guide will share fascinating insights into its history.

As we continue, we’ll pass through the Corihuayrachina site, where we’ll observe ancient agricultural terraces that highlight the importance of farming in Inca culture. Moving forward, we’ll enter the lush humid forests of this natural reserve, where you’ll get to admire the rich biodiversity of the Sacred Valley, including unique flora, fauna, and the Vilcanota River flowing beside us.

At the end of the day, we’ll reach our Cedrobamba campsite, where you can relax and unwind after an exciting day. Enjoy a superior camping experience with hot and cold beverages, snacks like crackers and popcorn, followed by a delicious dinner under the stars.

We’ll set off with a 20-minute hike towards Kilometer 104 on the Cusco – Machu Picchu route. Crossing a suspension bridge, we’ll begin our ascent along an Inca Trail route leading to Machu Picchu. Along the way, we’ll stop at incredible archaeological sites, including Chachabamba and Wiñayhuayna, both remarkable for their unique locations and historical ties to Machu Picchu.

As we continue, we’ll arrive at the final campsite used by hikers on the classic 4-day Inca Trail. From here, we’ll hike the last stretch to the famous Inti Punku (Sun Gate)-a spectacular moment, as this is where we’ll get our first panoramic view of Machu Picchu in all its glory.

After taking in this breathtaking sight, we’ll make our way down to Machu Picchu, where you’ll have a brief opportunity to explore before tomorrow’s full guided tour. Once we’ve soaked in the first glimpses of the Lost City of the Incas, we’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Town). Your guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the Aguas Calientes bus station, where you’ll board a 30-minute bus ride up to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. Be sure to have your passport ready, as it’s required for entry.

Once inside, you’ll enjoy a 2-hour guided tour through the legendary Inca citadel, learning about its history, architecture, and significance. After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore on your own. If you’re up for an extra adventure, you can hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (please let us know at booking time if you’re interested, as tickets must be reserved in advance).

For the return journey, you’ll take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, then head to the train station for your trip back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival, our transfer will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Cusco, marking the end of an unforgettable journey.

The climate in our country is highly variable and does not follow the traditional four seasons. Here, in just one day, you can experience all four seasons! That’s why we recommend our visitors be prepared for any weather conditions, whether rain or sunshine.

A very important factor affecting our climate is global warming, which has become a major concern due to the melting glaciers in the Peruvian Andes. This phenomenon also impacts the usual weather patterns.

However, something very distinct in our country, especially in the Andean regions, is that we only have two main seasons throughout the year:

  • Dry Season: This season lasts from the end of April until the end of September. During this time, the first rains start to appear, but overall, it is the best period to visit our region and explore the breathtaking Machu Picchu while avoiding weather-related inconveniences.
  • Rainy Season: This season extends from October until the end of April. During this period, we advise all visitors to pack their belongings in waterproof bags, as the weather can change quickly—sunny mornings can turn into heavy rain in just a few hours.

We understand that extreme climates exist worldwide, but this should not deter us from the desire to explore the world, discover marvelous cultures, and interact with them. Welcome to Peru and Machu Picchu!

This mountain is located within the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, rising 300 meters above the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes up and another 45 minutes down.

Huayna Picchu Mountain preserves several archaeological remains, including the Moon Temple and other structures connected by authentic Inca trails, steps, tunnels, and naturally formed caves, making the journey even more fascinating. Undoubtedly, this is one of Machu Picchu’s top attractions. From the summit, Huayna Picchu offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu Mountain, and the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Currently, the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Culture, regulates daily visitor access to the mountain. Only 400 tickets are available per day, divided into two groups of 200 each. The first entry slot is from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, and the second from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Due to its increasing popularity, we highly recommend booking at least three months in advance to secure your visit to this extraordinary place.

This mountain is also located within the park and is only a 1 hour and 20-minute hike on your own. Once you reach the summit, you’ll capture stunning photos with panoramic views of the entire valley where the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel is situated. You’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes Mountain range and the glaciers that protect this unique ecosystem.

The demand for permits to hike this mountain is rapidly increasing. For this reason, we recommend booking at least two months in advance, as there is a daily visitor limit for this incredible experience. The hike has two entry schedules: the first from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and the second from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with a maximum of 200 people per group.
