Itinerary

Our Lares Trek to Machu Picchu 4-day adventure begins early with personalized tent service and a cup of hot coca tea, helping you acclimatize to the altitude. After a hearty breakfast, our team will ensure you stay hydrated by providing water refills throughout the hike. Along the way, you’ll encounter alpacas, llamas, and see Cancha Cancha locals tending to native potatoes. You might even spot the fascinating vizcachas, the rodents that live in the rocky terrains.

Day two is considered the most challenging, as you will climb to the highest point of the trek, surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks – Pitusiray, Sahuasiray, and Colque Cruz. The breathtaking view at Pachacuti Pass, 4500 m.a.s.l., will reward your effort with colorful lagoons, glaciers, and South American camelids.

As you descend through the ancient Inca path in Lares Valley, you’ll traverse a mix of landscapes – from high Andean terrains to waterfalls, lagoons, and creeks. After a relaxing lunch by a serene lake, we’ll hike for another hour, culminating in the ancient Inca community of Qishuarani, where our second campsite awaits.

Packing List

Inka Trail Peru.info will provide you with a duffel bag during the briefing, typically a day before the trek. This bag accommodates up to 6 kg of your personal items, plus your sleeping bag. Our porters or horses will carry your duffel bag, camping equipment, and food. According to Peruvian law, the maximum weight a porter can carry is 23 kg (18 kg for the load, and 5 kg for the porter’s personal items). Any weight over the limit must be carried by you, unless you hire an extra porter.

You’ll also need a small daypack for your essential items, such as a water bottle, camera, and sunscreen. Your duffel bag will be accessible at lunch and at the campsites, as porters travel ahead of the group.

Recommended Gear for the Inca Trail or Alternative Hikes to Machu Picchu:

We strongly recommend hiking pants and long-sleeved T-shirts for daytime hikes. Bring fleece jackets and waterproof jackets as the weather can be unpredictable, especially during the rainy season. Consider packing a rain poncho or jacket and/or rain pants for protection. For camping nights, warm clothing is essential—down jackets are especially helpful. For your Machu Picchu tour, expect warmer weather, sometimes quite hot, so convertible hiking pants (that can turn into shorts) will be perfect for the hike.

These essentials will help ensure you’re well-prepared for the hike and tour!

  • Antibacterial hand gel
  • Binoculars
  • Camera
  • Clothes in layers
  • Insect repellant – DEET 20 strongly recommended.
  • Passport
  • Personal medication
  • Plastic bags for rain situations
  • Pocket money in Soles or USD dolars
  • Sandals or flip-flops
  • Sleeping bag
  • Small pack towel and hand towel
  • Sun glases
  • Sun hat
  • Sun scream
  • Swimsuit
  • Toilet paper
  • Torch (flashlight)
  • Warm clothes for overnights
  • Water bottle to be refil in campsites
  • Water purifier

The climate in our country is highly variable and does not follow the traditional four seasons. Here, in just one day, you can experience all four seasons! That’s why we recommend our visitors be prepared for any weather conditions, whether rain or sunshine.

A very important factor affecting our climate is global warming, which has become a major concern due to the melting glaciers in the Peruvian Andes. This phenomenon also impacts the usual weather patterns.

However, something very distinct in our country, especially in the Andean regions, is that we only have two main seasons throughout the year:

  • Dry Season: This season lasts from the end of April until the end of September. During this time, the first rains start to appear, but overall, it is the best period to visit our region and explore the breathtaking Machu Picchu while avoiding weather-related inconveniences.
  • Rainy Season: This season extends from October until the end of April. During this period, we advise all visitors to pack their belongings in waterproof bags, as the weather can change quickly—sunny mornings can turn into heavy rain in just a few hours.

We understand that extreme climates exist worldwide, but this should not deter us from the desire to explore the world, discover marvelous cultures, and interact with them. Welcome to Peru and Machu Picchu!

This mountain is located within the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, rising 300 meters above the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel. The hike takes approximately 45 minutes up and another 45 minutes down.

Huayna Picchu Mountain preserves several archaeological remains, including the Moon Temple and other structures connected by authentic Inca trails, steps, tunnels, and naturally formed caves, making the journey even more fascinating. Undoubtedly, this is one of Machu Picchu’s top attractions. From the summit, Huayna Picchu offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel, Machu Picchu Mountain, and the famous Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Currently, the Peruvian government, through the Ministry of Culture, regulates daily visitor access to the mountain. Only 400 tickets are available per day, divided into two groups of 200 each. The first entry slot is from 7:00 to 8:00 AM, and the second from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Due to its increasing popularity, we highly recommend booking at least three months in advance to secure your visit to this extraordinary place.

This mountain is also located within the park and is only a 1 hour and 20-minute hike on your own. Once you reach the summit, you’ll capture stunning photos with panoramic views of the entire valley where the Machu Picchu Inca Citadel is situated. You’ll also enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes Mountain range and the glaciers that protect this unique ecosystem.

The demand for permits to hike this mountain is rapidly increasing. For this reason, we recommend booking at least two months in advance, as there is a daily visitor limit for this incredible experience. The hike has two entry schedules: the first from 7:00 AM to 8:00 AM, and the second from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with a maximum of 200 people per group.
